Welcome to our October Bulletin!
This month, we are celebrating ten years of the Maths Hubs Programme and have been reflecting on the impact it has on maths education across England. Over the past decade, the programme has impacted 4.7 million pupils with over 12,000 schools engaging in teaching for mastery.
The range of CPD opportunities has also grown significantly, increasing from 17 to 30 over the last 10 years. In this month's bulletin we share all of the opportunities you can apply for right now. These include opportunities for Secondary Maths Teachers, Non-specialists, Teaching Assistants, Subject Leaders, Teachers supporting Level 2 Maths, A Level and Core Maths Teachers.
We round off with a special new video from the NCETM celebrating Ten Years of the Maths Hub programme to showcase the best of the activity across the network.

The Secondary Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Work Groups are for all departments that have previously participated in Teaching for Mastery. Sustaining Work Groups provide an opportunity each year for departments to continue working towards their vision for maths and provide the opportunity for schools to work beyond their own setting: networking, exchanging practice, and collaborating to support each other to sustain Teaching for Mastery.

This year we are able to offer schools two themes to choose from:
- Developing Problem Solving - The focus on mathematical thinking will explore practices and strategies to develop pupils' skill and mindsets towards routine and non-routine problems.
- Relaunching a mastery approach - For schools who want to go back to basics with understanding a mastery approach, perhaps due to significant change.

What do participants think of our SKTM - Secondary
Non-Specialist Teachers Programme?
|
|
The SKTM Secondary Non-Specialist Teachers Programme offers valuable CPD focusing on subject knowledge and pedagogy. There are significant numbers of people teaching maths in secondary schools without specialist initial teacher training and the 2023 Ofsted maths subject report ‘Coordinating mathematical success’ highlights the need for secondary schools to make sure that non-specialist teachers receive the necessary professional development to teach maths effectively. To find out more and apply for this programme follow the link below.
|
|
|
SKTM Secondary Teaching Assistants Programme is for teaching assistants who work predominantly with students in KS3 maths classroom or who lead intervention sessions with groups of students.
Participants will focus on using precise mathematical language, representations, and reasoning within the topics: addition and subtraction; multiplication and division; ratio; and fractions.

Our Secondary Maths Subject Leaders Community will be continuing for 2024/25 - dates are currently being finalised, and we will be in touch once enrolment opens. The community offers an opportunity to work collaboratively with other subject leaders, discuss developments and engage with research, and use this experience to inform their work in leading and developing maths education in schools.

For 2024/25 our Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group, we will be looking at Graph Transformations as a thread that weaves itself through the Key Stage 5 curriculum. We will look at what students come to us with from KS3/KS4 and how we can develop that understanding into the level needed for A-level study, and also look at how Graph Transformation re-emerges in themes such as the Chain Rule and the Normal Distribution. To find out more and apply for this Work Group follow the link below.

|
The SKTM Core Maths Teachers Programme supports teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching Core Maths and increases their confidence in teaching the course. The principal focus is on Core Maths subject knowledge and pedagogy and the programme will be based on these six key themes: Applying Fermi estimation and modelling; Exploring statistics; Making sense of finance; Using the pre-release materials; Developing critical analysis, and Creating contextualised activities.
